ABOUT Reglan

REGLAN ALERT!  Taking Reglan may lead to the neurological disorder Tardive Dyskinesia (Parkinson's Disease like) or Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome

Recent studies have linked long-term use of the drug REGLAN to the development of tardive dyskinsesia (TD). TD is a serious and often permanent neurological disorder characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements in the face and extremities.

The FDA has placed a black box warning (the strongest FDA warning) on REGLAN which is Free Reglan Case Evaluation tardive dyskinesiamanufactured by Schwarz Pharma and all drugs containing the pharmaceutical ingredient metoclopramide.  Reglan, generic name Metoclopramide, is a prescription drug used to treat gastrointestinal disorders like acid reflux disease and heart burn. Reglan can also be prescribed for patients with diabetic gastro paresis, and to post-operative patients and those undergoing cancer treatments.  The potentially dangerous drug is available in several forms, including tablets, oral disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and injection.

The black box label warns consumers about the risk of developing tardive dyskinesia, which causes involuntary repetitive movements (twitches) with long-term, high-dose use of metoclopramide. Symptoms of tardive dyskinesia can persist long after the patient stops using the drug.

If you or a loved one have developed any of these symptoms call your prescribing doctor immediately.
Metoclopramide can be found in Reglan tablets, oral disintegrating pills, metoclopramide oral solution and Reglan injections. Reglan is generically known as metoclopramide and may also be sold under the following brand names:

  • Degan, made by Lek
  • Maxeran, made by Sanofi Aventis
  • Maxolon, made by Shire/Valeant
  • Primperan, made by Sanofi Aventis
  • Pylomid, made by Bosnalijek.

The risk of developing Tardive Dyskinesia increases the longer a patient takes metoclopramide, and with higher doses. FDA studies show that around 20 percent of patients who developed drug-induced movement disorders after taking Metoclopramide had taken the drug for more than three months.

Symptoms of tardive dyskinesia include repetitive, involuntary, purposeless movements like: Grimacing, sticking your tongue out, lip smacking, puckering, pursing of the lips, rapid movement of arms, legs, fingers or toes, rapid eye blinking and twitches.

IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY USING REGLAN AND HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT ITS SAFETY, YOU SHOULD CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR REGARDING YOUR TREATMENT OPTIONS.
